Queen Mary, University Of London (QMUL)

About

The QM Kung Fu Society offers Queen Mary students (current and alumni) training in Wing Chun Kung Fu. Simple, direct and efficient, Wing Chun is a no-nonsense, practical, close-quarters martial art that based on reflexive movements, training you to respond instantly and instinctually to a surprise attack. It uses structure rather than strength and timing rather than speed. It's also based on natural human anatomy, so it doesn't require extraordinary flexibility or athleticism.Wing Chun defends and attacks simultaneously, hits without warning from any position, focuses on destabilising an aggressor's centre line, and only stops when it's unnecessary to continue. These qualities enable you to turn a stronger opponent's attacks, power and movement against them.First developed by Bhuddist nun Ng Mui over 300 years ago, it's named after her first student Yim Wing Chun, who used it to defeat a bandit who tried to force her into marriage. It became popularised in the 20th Century by the legendary Ip Man and his most famous student Bruce Lee.Classes are open to all from complete beginners, experienced practitioners and people that train in other martial arts.  Along with basic Wing Chun instruction, initial classes will typically consist of body conditioning training, pad work and stance training to build a strong foundation.  We'll work on form, open hand drills and two-person work in detail.  As you progress, there'll be a chance to partake in sparring sessions which starts with limited contact and then builds up.Bring a bottle of water, make sure you’re in loose comfortable clothing and expect to push yourself (physically and mentally – this is kung fu after all!). TrainingTaster/trial sessions: Your first lesson is free with no commitment. All classes occur in the Mind & Body Studio at Qmotion gym.
