We’re recruiting for students to join our UK Research & Development (R&D) Centre for this 12-month Modelling and Simulation Placement at Manchester University. 

Our EDF R&D UK Centre is an integral part of the EDF Group R&D international network. The strategy of the centre is to lead research and development for EDF, creating value, preparing for future challenges and unlocking opportunities for the business.  

During this placement, you’ll contribute to the R&D programme which underpins the lifetime extension of our current fleet of nuclear power plants.

Area of Responsibilities



During this R&D Modelling and Simulation placement, you’ll support the development of a set of programming tools which enable engineers to create finite element (FE) based models rapidly, underpinning the lifetime extension of our current fleet of nuclear power plants. You will focus on supporting the engineering team deploy CFD or finite element models for modelling different parts of the nuclear reactors (gas flows in reactors, ageing and structural integrity of the materials and structures) and assisting in continuing validation and verification of different software.  Previous students have worked on Linux operating systems, Git version control, Python programming, code aster for solving FE models, Salome Meca for creating geometries and FE models, and Data centric methods such as uncertainty quantification and data assimilation. This industrial placement will help you improve the skills in advanced mechanical models, and will provide you with the opportunity to work with experts from different parts of the company including EDF R&D in France, enabling you to build up your skills and knowledge within a large, complex organisation.

On track to achieve or will have already achieved a 2:2 undergraduate degree or 2:2 postgraduate qualification in disciplines such as Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Maths or another related degree Good knowledge in solid mechanics as well as some experience using finite element software. Strong technical and analytical skills Desire to learn and develop Our work placements are designed to help you identify your strengths and develop your skills within a real-world organisation, an experience which is invaluable for your future career. We’re looking for people who are keen to learn more about our exciting industry and have a desire to develop skills such as communication, problem-solving, team-working and time-management, within a commercial environment.
